The best tool is the one that supports the hiring work your team performs now. Start with a workflow test rather than a ranking: can the people doing the hiring understand candidate status and record the next decision?
Ask vendors to demonstrate shipped behavior
- Can an employer publish a public role, or only create an internal job record?
- Can a candidate apply without an account?
- Does the product send email, or only store notes and statuses?
- Does “scheduling” create calendar invitations, offer self-booking, or only record a date?
- Are reports operational counts or configurable analytics?
- What ownership, export, deletion, retention, and access controls are implemented?
Test the smallest complete task
Use a test account and a non-sensitive sample candidate. Create a role, add an application, change its stage, record an interview, and inspect the resulting history. Repeat on a narrow mobile viewport if the team expects to work from phones.
Treat roadmap items as unavailable
“Planned,” “coming soon,” and “on the roadmap” all mean the capability cannot support today’s hiring process. A roadmap can explain direction, but it should not be included when comparing current value.
Confirm pricing in the product
Check whether billing and plan limits are actually enforced. A marketing tier is not a reliable description of current access unless checkout, entitlements, cancellation, and support terms exist and are documented.
